An agent is only as reliable as the context it carries. Strip away who the principal is, what the mandate allows and how the operation should be recorded, and the agent is guessing. For AI-led payments, the useful design keeps that context in one place — a single perimeter where identity, authority and accounting live together, so an agent cannot act on a partial picture and cannot lose the parts that matter.

Context an agent must not lose

Three things have to travel with every operation:

  • the principal — the person or company standing behind it;
  • the mandate — the limits, counterparties and thresholds in force;
  • the accounting — how the operation should be recorded.

If any of these is separated from the payment, the agent is improvising, and no later reconstruction can fully repair it.

One perimeter

Keeping them together is the point of a single account perimeter. The mandate sits below the model, so limits are enforced rather than interpreted. Attribution travels with each operation, tying it to principal and agent. And the ledger records the result against the same context, so accounting reflects what the agent was actually allowed to do. Rather than three systems loosely joined, there is one where the pieces cannot drift apart.

Accounting that follows the agent

When accounting lives in the same perimeter, it stops being a separate reconciliation task. Every operation is already attributed, already tied to a policy version, and already recorded against the right principal. For a finance team, that means less reconstruction and more clarity — the ledger is a record of authorised action, not a pile of events to be sorted out afterwards. The context an agent needs to act and the record the business needs to explain that action are the same context, kept in the same place.

In short

  • An agent needs principal, mandate and accounting together.
  • Split context makes the agent improvise and the record incomplete.
  • One perimeter keeps enforcement, attribution and accounting aligned.
  • Accounting becomes part of the operation, not a later clean-up.
