A payments firm deciding whether to touch crypto faces three families of regime rather than one, each with its own calendar. The UK's FCA framework, the EU's MiCA, and the various VASP registration regimes do not move in step. For a business planning a route, that asynchrony is the thing to plan around — not any single deadline.

Three regime families

The FCA framework governs crypto activity in the UK. MiCA provides a harmonised regime across the EU. VASP registration regimes sit in many other jurisdictions, with different scopes and different competent authorities. Because they differ in what they cover and when they apply, a firm can be authorised in one context and unregulated in another.

What the calendars mean

Timelines matter more than dates. A firm that obtains an EU authorisation gains a harmonised position across member states, while UK activity runs on the UK's own schedule. Other jurisdictions, such as Canada's, have their own registration route: SUPA FINANCE LTD (British Columbia, Canada, BC1576784) is registered as a money services business with FINTRAC in July 2026, with RPAA applicability under review.

Whether and when to enter crypto

The decision is not binary. Stablecoins and digital assets can be treated as rails to be used through regulated providers rather than as a business to be licensed. SUPA's rail adapters include stablecoins and agent protocols, evaluated alongside other paths. That approach lets a firm serve digital-asset flows without taking on every regime at once.

The practical advice is to plan in sequence rather than in parallel. Decide which regime the business most needs, obtain it, and treat the others as options to be exercised later. Because the calendars do not align, trying to satisfy all of them at once usually means satisfying none of them well.

In short

  • Three regime families, three calendars — they do not align.
  • FCA, MiCA and VASP regimes differ in scope and timing.
  • A harmonised EU position and a UK position run on different schedules.
  • Digital assets can be used as rails before they become a business line.
