Treasury has always been a coordination problem: payables, receivables and foreign exchange, all moving against one another under a single policy and a single view of cash. Increasingly, part of that coordination is done by software. When agents handle payables, receivables and FX, the treasury function does not disappear — it changes shape. The question for a CFO is what that looks like, and what has to stay firmly under human control.
One policy, one ledger
The advantage of software execution is consistency, but only if it runs on one policy and one ledger. Multiple agents acting independently, each with its own limits and its own view of cash, recreate the fragmentation treasury exists to remove. A single policy — limits, approved counterparties, approval thresholds — applied below the model gives every agent the same rules. A single ledger with evidence gives the finance team one place to look.
Payables, receivables and FX
The work agents can carry looks familiar. Payables: scheduled and triggered payments within limits. Receivables: matching incoming flows to what they represent. FX: converting between the currencies the business actually holds, internally where possible. What changes is the cadence and the volume an agent can sustain, not the nature of the tasks.
Oversight without micromanagement
Autonomy here is bounded, not absolute. Operations inside the mandate proceed; those that cross a threshold become approval requests, with the invoice and counterparty attached. The CFO sees a ledger traceable to principal, agent and policy version — oversight of the rules rather than of every payment. That is the balance: agents for throughput, people for judgement. A treasury built this way scales with volume rather than with headcount, provided the rules themselves stay under human ownership. The model changes how the work is done, not who is responsible for it.
In short
- Software changes the shape of treasury, not its purpose.
- One policy and one ledger prevent each agent from fragmenting the view.
- Agents suit high-volume payables, receivables and FX.
- Thresholds keep consequential decisions with people.
