Connect the relationship. Clear the obligation.

A shared operational layer for financial institutions that want their correspondent relationships to do more.

Paired obligations meet in a glass clearing chamber before the remainder is settled.
01 / Clearing & relationships

Bilateral relationships, shared coordination.

Each relationship begins with the institutions themselves: their agreements, supported services, counterparty decisions and applicable obligations. SUPA Protocol is designed to make those relationships operational through a common language for instructions and outcomes.

That is the role of the bus. It coordinates the exchange without turning every participant into the same institution or removing the boundaries around its services.

Connected glass reservoirs make liquidity available across participating institutions.
Clearing & relationships

Clear what can be cleared.

When obligations are eligible for matching or netting, a clearing process can establish what remains to be settled between the relevant participants. This can avoid unnecessary gross movements and make more deliberate use of liquidity.

Eligibility matters. Netting depends on the agreements, legal treatment, currencies and service configuration involved. Not every instruction can be combined with another, and clearing itself is not final settlement.

03 / Clearing & relationships

Settle through an appropriate route.

The remaining obligation is completed using a supported settlement arrangement and the responsible financial institutions. A useful protocol connects the clearing decision to that real-world execution and its confirmation.

The objective is a coordinated service in which participants can understand what they owe, what needs to move and who is responsible for completing the next step.

AN ILLUSTRATIVE PERSPECTIVE

Establish the obligation before moving the funds.

Two participating institutions have eligible obligations under an agreed arrangement. Rather than treat every obligation as an unrelated movement, a supported clearing process can establish the amount that remains to be settled. The institutions still need to understand the underlying instructions and the basis on which they were combined.

The remaining obligation then follows the appropriate settlement arrangement. Its confirmation is a separate event, connected back to the clearing result and the original records. This distinction matters operationally: a calculated amount is not a completed movement of funds. SUPA’s intended role connects the relationship, the clearing process and the execution outcome, with applicability determined by the institutions’ agreements and the legal and operational conditions of the service.

A clearing disc and a separate settlement chamber have distinct roles.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Is clearing the same as settlement?

No. Clearing establishes and coordinates eligible obligations. Settlement discharges the relevant obligation through the applicable arrangement.

Can unrelated obligations always be netted?

No. Eligibility depends on the agreements, legal treatment, currencies and service configuration. The network does not make all obligations interchangeable.

Do participants still need settlement arrangements?

Yes. The remaining obligation requires a supported route, appropriate funding and responsible institutions able to confirm the outcome.
